Taylor West of Team USA Joins the Team STX Family

We are excited to announce that Team USA’s Taylor West joins the Team STX athlete roster. The highly decorated James Madison University (JMU) graduate will continue to be a force on the field, and we’re excited to watch! To get to know her better, we asked her a few questions.

Tell us about yourself. How long you've been playing, what you love about field hockey and your current spot on Team USA?

I have had a hockey stick in my hand for as long as I can remember. My mom was a high school coach, so I always entertained myself at practices by dribbling around. I started playing hockey around age 4, but not organized hockey until 3rd grade.

I love the athleticism that field hockey requires and how fast-paced it is in comparison to other sports. I will officially join Team USA in the fall and cannot wait to get started!

Taylor has always hit the ground running throughout her field hockey career

Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions?

I wouldn’t say that I’m a superstitious person, but I have a couple of habits I have developed that I do before every game. I like to wear my hair pretty much the same way every time I play. I usually have one to two braids in my hair and then pull it up into a high bun.

Also, I make sure that I put my left shinguard and sock on first, then the right foot. I’m not quite sure how that came about, but now I don’t want to change things up. In high school, my athletic trainer gave me a four-leaf clover that I stick in my shinguard every time I play.

What are a few songs you can’t start a work out or game without listening to?

I listen to a little bit of everything, so my music selection is quite random. When I am working out, I love anything that is upbeat! Before games, I love listening to “Dream On” by Aerosmith even though it is a slower song. This was a song that we listened to in high school before every game - it still gives me chills for some reason! A few other songs on my workout playlist include:

What is your go-to conditioning workout?

I enjoy track workouts. I usually do varying distances of 400 or 800 meters with different rest times in between. 100 yard sprints are also a go-to workout.

When you’re not training, what do you like to do for fun?

When I am not training, I love spending time with my friends and family. In the summer, I love being anywhere on the water. I live pretty close to the beach and spend a good amount of time there when I can. This past year, I got a paddleboard and I love to use it whenever I get the chance.

Your senior year at JMU ended extremely well, and you were one of the most decorated players in program history. What advice do you have for young athletes who want to be where you are?

It might sound cliché, but don’t underestimate the value of hard work. As an athlete, development does not just happen on the field, but in the time you spend outside of practices. Also, don’t let setbacks define who you are as an individual or player. It is so important that you make sure you are having fun and always enjoy playing!

What equipment are you currently using and how does it enhance your style of play?

I’m currently playing with the STX Stallion 600. I love the touch and ball control that the stick allows me to have. I use a lot of 3-D skills when I play, so the toe shape and bow helps with those skills.

What do you look forward to in the future with STX?

I am excited to be joining Team STX. I played with STX in college and can’t wait to continue using STX products with Team USA.
