Ice in His Veins: New York Rangers’ Anthony DeAngelo Joins Team STX

You could say NHL defenseman Anthony DeAngelo has ice running through his veins. At the age of two, the New York Rangers’ newest hot shot got his first taste of life on the ice and never looked back…

As he worked his way through the youth hockey ranks, DeAngelo proved he was one to watch — with a reputation for playing hard and fast, he solidified himself as an early top prospect for the league and ultimately earned a spot as a first-round draft pick in 2014.

Originally drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning, DeAngelo made his NHL debut with the Arizona Coyotes in 2016 before being traded to his hometown Rangers. Since playing hockey for life and repping your hometown is pretty much the ultimate goal, we sat down with DeAngelo to talk about his experience and what it’s like to live the NHL dream. Here’s what he had to say:

Some sports you pick up in middle school/high school. Hockey’s different. You play for life. How long have you been in the game?

Hockey has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. One day, my mom and brother were driving around town and they passed by the local rink. It stuck out to my mom and she encouraged my brother to give it a shot. Then as soon as I was old enough, I tried it, loved it and the rest is history.

You’ve had a number of significant achievements early on in your career — what’s been the most surreal moment so far?

Great feeling. Thanks for all the support and messages!

Biggest moment would have to be my first NHL game. Hitting the ice in front of a packed stadium for the first time – that’s something you never forget. I actually had the opportunity to score that day...that was something I didn’t expect, especially as a defender. It made the moment that much sweeter.

You left home to start your junior career at age 15 — how did that decision impact you as a player and person?

At first, it was a really tough decision, but looking back, it helped me get to where I am today! My parents were unsure at first, but they really trusted my coach and his family, which made them more comfortable with the decision.

As professional athletes, we travel all the time. With my junior team, I got used to that rhythm early on since we traveled cross-country for games pretty frequently. It was nice to already have that experience when I moved up to minor league and eventually major league.

Congrats on signing with the Rangers! How does it feel to play closer to home now?

It’s always tough to get traded, but getting traded to my home team definitely made it easier. Growing up, it’s every athlete’s dream to rep their hometown. The Rangers have such an incredible history and stake in this game, and it's awesome to get to represent this team and city.

When you aren’t checking people into the boards, what do you like to do in your free time?

Sports and friends. Whenever I’m free, I’ll normally kick back and relax with the guys and we’ll throw whatever sport is in season on the TV. I’m a huge Eagles fan so I try to catch their games as much as possible.

What does a typical day at the gym look like for you?

In the offseason, I typically work out in the morning with a focus on building muscle, since we tend to lose a lot during the season. I also make sure to skate 2 - 4 times a week to. This past summer, I also tried mixing it up with boxing and yoga and I loved it!

Anthony knows – keeping it tight in the offseason is crucial for in-season success. Looking to mix it up? Here are 8 ways you can grow your game off the ice.
