STX Adds Top Team USA, England Talent Ahead of World Cup

We love connecting with players who are helping to grow the game (and if they happen to be killing it on the field, that’s pretty cool too!) …which is why we are soooo excited to welcome not one, not two, but three new players to Team STX: Michelle Tumolo, Claire Faram and Laura Merrifield!

Tumolo, a Syracuse alum, is an attacker for Team USA, and Faram and Merrifield are midfielders for Team England. We sat down for a quick interview with these talented women, and learned some interesting tidbits (for one, Flo Rida's "My House" is definitely the unofficial song for Team England)...

First memory of playing lacrosse?

Michelle: It was the summer of my freshman year of high school with my cousin Liz. I knew nothing about the sport, but was inspired by her playing at Rowan University. We had a catch, and I attended my high school lacrosse camp soon after. I vividly remember getting in the car and obsessing over lacrosse to my Mom.

 

How much color is too much color?

Claire: Throwing and catching with my lovely Grandpa in the garden, aged about nine with my woodie stick!

Laura: The first time that I picked up a stick was at my high school opening day. Some of the players were teaching the new girls some skills…from that moment, I was hooked.

Player you look up to?

Michelle: [Syracuse Women's Lacrosse Head Coach] Gary Gait and [University of Oregon Women's Lacrosse Head Coach] Katrina Dowd. I had the pleasure of being coached and playing with both (if you count in practice at Syracuse with Gary haha). I was mesmerized every single day by what they could do, not just with their stick handling skills, and tricky shots, but the no-look passes and shifty footwork that made a simple step look like a Michael Jordan crossover.

Claire: I had a poster of Jen Adams in my room as a kid!

Laura: Lucy Lynch who played for England in the 2003 Junior World Cup and is still a senior player for Team England. I feel very lucky to have the opportunity to play alongside her. She’s a fast, dynamic player who is exciting to watch play at both ends of the field.

New country to which you’d like to take lacrosse?

Michelle: India! I believe that it would help the sport grow and become popular in other countries. 

Claire: I love teaching lacrosse in England, but I wouldn’t mind taking it to somewhere warmer…maybe Fiji?

Laura: Jamaica…it’s a place I’d love to visit and they are well-known for their world-dominant sprinters. It would be cool to see some of that talent converted into lacrosse talent.

Lacrosse career goal?

Michelle: As a player, to win gold at the World Cup this summer with my teammates and coaches. As a coach, to win a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship and National Championship with my Ducks [University of Oregon].

Claire: To play in a senior World Cup.

Laura: Definitely! And to win a medal at the World Cup this summer.

Go-to workout and top of your workout playlist?

Michelle: I usually just run some distance on the treadmill and end with sprints, or do sprints on the field. I mix in some body weight circuits also to keep my muscles strong. Playlist? Anything Beyonce or Rihanna, but I can really listen to anything. 

 

Getting on @ericalagrow level...probably not. 3s good for me

Claire: My favourite type of session is lifting, but it’s good to have a really varied training programme that keeps it interesting. Top of my playlist…"My House" by Flo Rida.

Laura: Go-to workout would be speed and agility work. Having a step on your opponent gives you that edge for every 50/50 ball. Top of the playlist gotta be "My House" by Flo Rida.
